The SL has an aluminum chassis. BMW choose not to go the aluminum path but instead they choose carbon fiber for the future. Stronger, stiffer and lighter than aluminum. |

This is just a sign of things to come. Just wait until the coupe comparisons come out. Keep in mind that the coupe is much lighter than all it's competition accept for the Jag. It also accelerates faster and handles better than the convertible.....

Similar comparison, but between the non-M/AMG versions:

In my opinion the 6-Series is not directly comparable to the SL. They are different cars. The SL is similar to a car such as Z8 not the 6er which is significantly bigger and heavier. The true competitor for it is indeed the CSL, not the CL either. If you exclude the doors they are very similar in concept. Of course now you have the 6 Series Gran Coupe to pit directly against but they are essentially the same car minus the doors.

People are wondering how the SL is lighter than the 6 series? How about the fact that it's a 2 seater while the 6 seats 4...? I've seen the two side by side and the 6 is gigantic compared to the SL and they aren't competitors at all.
As someone already said, the Benz and BMW lineups don't always align to produce direct competitors, it is fair to compare the SL and 6 because they-re bought by some of the same people but you have to remember that they've always been different sizes and the 6 can carry four people. |

I find it very good that BMW is getting their ass kicked by the competition. I'm glad rival manufacturers are coming in lighter and faster, BMW has become arrogant with the record sales they have posted the last two years. A business cannot ignore their customers feedback, I don't know one BMW customer who is happy with the supersize models and M brand dilution.

kudos to bmw for delivering a car that performs that well given that it DOES weigh 200 kg more. Lap times are meaningless for convertibles, anyway.

Can't agree more. If there's one thing about the "new" BMW is that despite their weight, they can still manufacturer something with impressive numbers. Considering and taking what the M6 really is, it does a very good job especially against a lighter roadster.

The 6-series is heavier compared to the SL because it is simply bigger. Size-wise it is like comparing a 5 series to a 3 series (4600mm to 4900mm length). The 6er is not only bigger though, it has a different purpose altogether. It is a big GT while the SL is roadster. It's like comparing a 3-series convertible to a Mazda MX-5. The closest thing to SL was the Lexus SC imo. Not quite as good obviously but similar philosophy. I agree though, currently the 6er convertible is the closest thing BMW has to SL but they are still very different cars. |

All the comments about Merc being better based on this Test are ridiculous. The BMW was right there in numbers at pretty much every test and yet it's 400lbs+ heavier and longer.
Sry, but Merc should have KILLED it with those stats and they barely beat it. Loss in my books. |

It's not the electronics, it's BMW's strange decision to drop many aluminium suspension bits from the last 5/6 for steel bits.

Should be the MB CL63 and not the SL63. Why are they even comparing a 4-seat GT to a 2-seat roadster?
