EDC Shocks to Standard Shocks?

Good day,

My 2012 F30 335i has the Adaptive M Suspension, which don't get me wrong is a great optional extra, however it has been 385, 000km (240,000mls) and they are 100% toast.

I would like to install standard F30 shocks as they are much cheaper, lighter and there is less to go wrong with them.

Will the standard shocks fit correctly?

And how do I code out the EDC from the car's computer?

I have searched the forums but haven't been able to find anything about this for some reason

So if I buy OEM shocks do you think I will need to replace the springs as well or could I leave them alone?

And before you coded the car, what warning lights did you have?

I believe you can leave the springs alone.

My shop did all the work for me, so I didn't have chance to see the warning lights.

You could go the route of remote tuning, or you could code out the errors with a hardwire kit that you mount in or near the wheel well. This kit basically tricks the car into thinking that the EDC system is still working. (https://www.ecstuning.com/b-kw-suspe...t/68510301~kw/)

My car is still under warranty from some large repairs that BMW did. So for me, tuning is out of the question because I'm unable to tamper with my ECU. I've heard good things about both so it doesn't seem like you could make the wrong choice here. If you do not want to find a way to fasten these EDC kits, then just go with tuning.

Thank you so much for letting me know about a second option!

I am hoping that remote tuning works out to start with, just waiting for my mechanic to get back to me about it!

Hopefully I can get it done soon, will let you know how it goes

I had some issues after the EDC removal. What that coding did was to update the Vehicle Order (VO) to pretend the car came out of the factory without the EDC option.

A couple of years ago, I needed to replace a part (Fuel Control Pump Unit P/N 16147411596) which required to be coded into the car. My mechanic had a lot of trouble to make this work.

His notes say "Unable to code EKPM3 with standard BMW ISTA+. Found vehicle order has been modified which caused the ISTA+ programming issues. The EKPM3 is now coded successfully (the only way to code this vehicle is E-SYS only)."

He also said any new part that requires coding will have similar issues.

Oh dear, that seems to be quite an issue!

*Update*

Finally got the shocks replaced today with OEM passive shocks.

Now, would I recommend you go from Adaptive to *OEM* Passive shocks, definitely not.

The reasone being is that the front shocks actually don't fit properly with the swaybar link.
Only my left shock was able to fit but the right one has a different bracket that doesn't line up correctly.

So what did I do, well the smart guy who helped me with the install built a new bracket so that it would all fit correctly, you definitely need a professional to do this as these are important saftey components.

I have just driven the car back home and it feels absolutely brilliant, if you want to do this conversion, rather get good quality OE+ components as they will fit perfectly!

Apart from that I only have one warning on the i-drive for the chassis, *Not the chassie stabilisation warning lights, don't worry*

Also, the car keeps itself in comfort, I might decode the shocks at some point, but I do not want any further issue's as mentioned previously, I will just see if I can live without Sport+ and make a decision from there.

You could have used two left end links.

I believe coding can be done remotely if needed, you would need a laptop and appropriate cable or wifi dongle and some digging around in your trunk to disconnect the module.

Yes, very good idea, unfortunately we tried that and it still didn't fit.

BMW definitely didn't want people to change these shocks it seems.

I have been reading forums on how to code it out, I might have also found a local guy who can help me with the process as well.

Will update this thread again if I get it done.
